About HyREX

Technology Introduction

HyREX is a hydrogen reduction ironmaking technology that combines POSCO's proprietary
FINEX fluidized bed technology and SNNC's electric smelting furnace (ESF) technology.

Unlike the traditional blast furnace method which occurs reduction and melting simultaneously, In the FINEX process,
reduction and melting are separated, reduction occurs in the multi-stage fluidized bed reactors and melting occurs in the melter-gasifier.
POSCO has been producing pig iron with FINEX plants since 2003, based on FINEX's fluidized-bed technology commercialized with a capacity of
2 million tons and SNNC's experience in operating large-scale electric smelting furnaces, we will develop a new hydrogen based ironmaking process that uses hydrogen as a reducing agent instead of coal.

Blast Furnace, FINEX, HyREX

The key principle behind POSCO's hydrogen reduction ironmaking is
to substitute all the unit processes generating carbon dioxide in the FINEX with processes that utilize hydrogen and electricity.

By substituting the FINEX melter-gasifier using coal with an electric smelting furnace, carbon dioxide generation would be reduced innovatively,
We will complete hydrogen reduction ironmaking technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions significantly by replacing the reducing gas of FINEX fluidized-bed reactors with hydrogen, and by replacing the coal-based FINEX melter-gasifier with an electric smelting furnace.
